Yes, this summer Brookfield Renewable Power is undergoing major upgrades as defined in their renewal of their license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. That work included the dredging of the power canal and reconstruction within the plant.

While this construction was going on it provided some excellent viewing of the Cohoes Falls, particularly with all the rain we had during July.

The external construction is now complete and the power canal is once again "watered."

Note also that under the new license a minimal "vailling" flow will be maintained over the falls.

Does anybody know what the major construction is all about at the hydro plant and feeder canal?

It would be helpful if someone posted some info on the many web sites on this subject.

The Mohawk Towpath Byway would like to collect stories of life on or near the Mohawk River, the waterway west, and the Erie Canal. If you have a story like this or have a parent or grandparent with one locked up inside, please let us know. You may not want us to publish it here and we certainly would respect your wishes, but we don't want to loose these stories. They are a part of our heritage. Contact the Mohawk Towpath Byway at admin@mohawktowpath.org.

I enjoyed an awesome experience touring these historic tug boats in the late Fall. The owner, Mr. Trueman, is quite passionate about these historic vessels and it's a must see for kids and adults alike.

Congrats on the new park for the falls.I am glad you finally recognized this beautiful site.My Mom used to live on the corner of mohawk street facing the falls. Where marsolais store used to be.I grew up in cohoes. use to fish below the power plant.for bass and eels. we had to climb the fence to go fishing below where the power plant meets the falls.I live in Florida now. But i miss the view of water coming over the falls in the spring. What took you so long to finally recognize this very historical site.Hope everyone enjoys it like i did when i was a resident of Cohoes.
